I have begun writing about music on The Cinema 4 Pylon with greater frequency, but I always feel that if someone is going to write about music or even review albums on their site, it helps to give the reader some way to know something about the writer's musical likes or even possibly dislikes.
It's a little hard in my case, because I own so much damn music. I mean, I have a lot of music, and just like with movies, the music that has most influenced me (or even riled me) tends to stick with me forever. The list below is by no means everything that I have enjoyed in my life, but it is a pretty good window into my tastes, bad or otherwise. Included on this list is just about any recording artist (including some prime comedians) that I feel belongs in my personal pantheon. I don't necessarily listen to all of these artists or their music consistently; some of those included (such as Peter, Paul and Mary) may have had a key record that was important to me at a certain time in my life (their version of John Denver's Leaving on a Jet Plane, my favorite song as a young child). But the bulk of the artists on this list are on my constant replay list. They are the ones that would comprise the foundation of the library of my own radio station were it ever to come to fruition. Or at least just a constant playlist on my own computer (probably the closest I would ever come).
Someday, I may attempt to alphabetize this list or even try to create some order to it. Or maybe not... maybe never. For now, I thought it might be more fun to create the list as a sort of "wordcloud," since that is how I tend to think of all the music I like inside my head anyway. It makes it easier to snatch the perfect song out for showing singing or to kill a certain number of minutes at the bus stop in the rare instance where I have forgotten my headphones. Whether that massive, amorphous blob of great music is stored in my head or in a device in my hand, that's sheer heaven to me.
Rik Tod Johnson's favorite and/or most influential all-time recording artists, bands, singers and songwriters of all time (in absolutely no order whatsoever):
