Some of my favorite films that you can view or download at www.archive.org. All films are in the public domain.

The General (1926)
Dir: Clyde Bruckman & Buster Keaton
Starring: Buster Keaton, Marion Mack

White Zombie (1932)
Dir.: Victor Halperin
Starring: Bela Lugosi

One of the most famous horror films from the 1930s, and one that definitely makes use of star Bela Lugosi's hypnotic stare, even superimposing it over the credits (and many scenes in the film). It's rough, varied in quality, and never less than fascinating.

Bluebeard (1944)
Dir.: Edgar G. Ulmer
Starring: John Carradine

Early serial killer thriller where a twisted artist hires models for a series of portraits and then strangles each one as he finished their portrait. Based on the famous Bluebeard legend.
