If you consider yourself a horror fan, and you still don't know who the hell Coffin Joe is, you'd better get on the ball. Here's the first of the truly odd, creepy and rather edgy Coffin Joe franchise from Brazilian auteur José Mojica Marins, who not only wrote and directed, but also plays the lead character, the infamous Zé do Caixão (Coffin Joe). At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul [title in Portuguese: À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma] is apparently now in the public domain and available for free on archive.org. You have to wait through an introduction from someone representing the Holy Terror Podcast, but it is only for about 30 seconds. Enjoy, if you dare...!

I watched the first of these films just last year. I found his intense hatred of religion, and the often petty ways he would spit in god's face, quite endearing. 'Look at me, I'm eating pork! EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil!'
That's exactly what struck me the first time I saw it. Because I was not raised in such a way, I had to ponder what it would be like to actually find such actions offensive.
